I’ve always liked owls, their mysteriousness, and the way their appearance and behavior inspire various superstitious beliefs. I learned more about that when I visited Cumberland Gap in Kentucky, and read Night Comes to the Cumberland, by Harry Caudill. While in Kentucky, I visited the Hensley Homestead, which is a restored mountain settlement, now an outdoor museum, on a plateau on top of Brush Mountain. I photographed many if not most of the cabins and other buildings, and then started combining drawings made from them with drawings of owls.
What predates my fascination with owls is my interest in the old tin-roofed, weathered houses that I used to see when visiting my grandparents in Tennessee, where my mother grew up and I was born. Sadly most of these houses have disappeared, and a bit of local history with them.
