Hummingbird in a Butterfly Bush
Who isn't fascinated by hummingbirds?! I painted this picture from photos I took in my backyard. I'd planted a butterfly bush next to the Rose of Sharon, and noticed that for the first time ever, my yard has more than just a passing visit from hummingbirds. They'd usually show up in the late afternoon, and I started waiting for them from a short distance away with my zoom lens camera. I found it easier to take movie clips, and then to put the video on my computer, and play through it several times, looking for frames that would make a good painting composition. Then I'd take a screenshot and use it as my source. I want to show the hummingbird in its natural environment, so I include many details of the surrounding vegetation. It takes quite a while to get it the way I want it.
