Mixie Market Open for Business
This painting highlights a time in history when most farming communities had little grocery stores right there in the midst of the fields and woods. The model for this painting was my grandfather, J.T. Simmons. He and my grandmother farmed in rural central Tennessee for decades, mostly raising cotton and milking cows. As they got older, they started looking for another way to make a living, and built a little grocery store just up the road from where his Uncle Lucian's store used to be. As with many other country stores, neighbors would stop for groceries, and stay to discuss the latest local news.
