For those of you who grew up on a farm, do you remember when cows could enjoy their lives? They could lounge around around outdoors, munch fresh grass, feel the sun on their backs. Twice a day, the farmer would call them in to be milked and fed, and of course, in the winter, they were bedded down in the barn, warmed by the contained body heat of the herd. It was kind of like humans going to work at certain hours, and living their lives the remainder of the time. They weren't treated like milk dispensers that had no feelings. I painted this in the 1980s and saw it in my daughter's house when I was babysitting their pets.
